Hello, my name is Stacy Hutchins I am a licensed marriage and family therapist.  My emphasis has been on helping families with substance abuse, and mental health problems. It is my hope that I can help people who are feeling depressed and anxious, to recover and bring about wellbeing. I have experience working with Children and Family Services (CFS) court cases. Helping families through the court process, keeping families safe, and helping them to recover is rewarding.  It is a pleasure to work with children and families with developmental disabilities and to work with the LGBTQ community.

Approach & Values

Emotion focused therapy is my method of choice, because if you can uproot the causal emotions that keep negative behaviors in place, then you change the effects/symptoms. As the name implies the focus of sessions are on feelings.  I also use a psycho-educational counseling approach because, if a person resonates with a learned technique, then they are more likely to incorporate that teaching. This technique works well with individuals who are interested in learning more about parenting techniques, communication skills, social skills, coping skills, and emotions regulation techniques. All of which can be beneficial. Children do well with Cognitive behavioral therapy.  This technique helps children to slow down their behavior reactions, reduces negative thinking, and increases positive thinking.  For clients who have been severely affected by traumatic events, substance abuse problems, and childhood abuse, then Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is the method of choice. Because it may be difficult to access the causal emotions without having first resolved trust issues, loneliness, and fears.

Education

I have an associate degree in philosophy from Chapman University, a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cal State University Dominguez Hills, and a master’s degree in counseling psychology from National University. I have certificates in Substance Abuse Counseling, Domestic Violence Counseling and CBT for traumatized children.  I have taught Parenting and anger management classes. In-addition I have a good working knowledge and experience with DBT.

Expertise

It is a pleasure to counsel and provide support to individuals, couples, and families, who are struggling with relationship problems.  It is rewarding to provide guidance and education to children and adolescents who are affected by divorce and/or parental issues. I enjoy working as a psychotherapist with ACT Family Counseling.
